The Next VMware?
It’s easy to understand why Bob Wiederhold sounds confident. The CEO of Transitive Corp. is promoting software that allows Linux-based x86 servers to run Sun/SPARC applications on the fly. Transitive’s partners include Intel and Apple Computer.
Wiederhold uses the term “virtualization” to describe Transitive’s software, but he’s quick to define how Transitive differs from EMC’s VMware. While VMware allows servers to run multiple instances of different operating systems, Transitive’s software sits above the operating system level, and translates code on the fly from Sun/SPARC to Linux/x86.
During C3Expo in New York earlier this week, Transitive took the stage with Intel to promote Sun/SPARC migrations to Xeon and Itanium servers–a strategy that will surely interest IT managers on Wall Street. Stay tuned. I suspect Transitive will announce similar work with AMD’s Opteron processors in the months ahead.
