How HP Upended Dell
Hewlett-Packard has scored a small but strategic victory in the server market that highlights how Dell lost touch with some customers.
Rackspace, a respected managed service provider and Web hosting firm, is diversifying beyond Dell servers and embracing HP servers. The decision to embrace HP’s servers was first reported in Rackspace’s hometown paper, The San Antonio Business Journal.
Rackspace insiders are quick to praise Dell’s product quality, performance and pricing models. But one Rackspace source says HP’s early commitment to AMD’s Opteron processor drove the decision to embrace HP’s servers. Dell ignored Opteron for three years before announcing limited support for the processor in May.
Imagine that: The world’s fastest-moving server company was late to a business opportunity.
