Surface Mini or Microsoft Tablet Partner Program: What Comes First?
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is developing next-generation Surface tablets — perhaps even the so-called Surface Mini to counter the iPad Mini, Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. But will the new Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets arrive before Microsoft announces a Surface channel partner program? Hmmm
So far, Microsoft has not introduced a formal way for VARs and IT consultants to resell Surface devices. But rumors continue to swill that a Surface channel partner program could be announced during Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference 2013.
Microsoft won’t comment on the speculation. But The VAR Guy’s sources keep pointing to a potential WPC 2013 partner program launch.
What Comes First?
Now comes a new question: Will Microsoft launch its next round of tablets — including a potential Surface Mini with either a 7- or 8-inch screen — before the tablet partner program arrives.
- Mary Jo Foley, blogger for All About Microsoft, describes how the so-called Windows 8 Blue release will set the stage for smaller tablets from PC makers, tablet makers and perhaps even Microsoft itself.
- And Paul Thurrott’s Windows Super Site blog notes that Amazon accidentally previewed a small-screen Windows 8 tablet from Acer.
So when will Windows 8 Blue (perhaps the foundation for new tablets) arrive? Some answers should surface during the Microsoft’s Build conference (June 26-28, San Francisco). Two weeks later, Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (July 7-11, Houston) will attract thousands of VARs and IT consultants.
The VAR Guy sortta suspects that Microsoft will finally coordinate its tablet hardware and partner program messages… And that coordination should take center stage at WPC13.
