All Aboard Railroad WiFi
The VAR Guy is keeping an eye on 4G Metro, a solutions provider that specializes in WiFi for public transit.
While some broadband providers–such as Cablevision–are deploying WiFi in railroad stations, that approach largely misses the mark. Millions of commuters would likely welcome WiFi service during their train rides to and from work each day.
Small VARs such as CEDX have promoted WiFi to railroads for several years. But little action has occurred. The VAR Guy thinks that’s about to change.
Railroad WiFi projects are under way in San Francisco-San Jose. 4G Metro is located in Granbury, Texas, so it’s safe to say we’ll see similar projects pop up soon in that state. And in New York, there’s buzz about several vendors proposing railroad WiFi as part of a pending Long Island public broadband project, which will blanket Suffolk and Nassau counties.
Skeptical VARs, please note: Similar projects have already succeeded across Europe.
