Former Oracle President: Taking On Ellison?
Ray Lane, the former president of Oracle, has spent recent years as a venture capitalist. But The VAR Guy just noticed that Lane is co-founder and chairman of SpikeSource—one of Silicon Valley’s most interesting startups.
Lane gave Oracle some financial discipline when the database giant needed it most. In some ways, he is now helping SpikeSource to compete with Oracle. The startup is developing new methods to ensure interoperability between open source applications—which will increasingly compete with Oracle’s commercial software stacks.
Keep an eye on this market, fellow VARs. Much in the way that VARs cashed in on Microsoft’s BackOffice suite in the 1990s, The VAR Guy expects SpikeSource to create a channel for integrated open source applications.
