MySQL Rides Red Hat Bandwagon
After Red Hat announced a new initiative to promote integrated business applications earlier today, The VAR Guy did a little digging for more info. His key question: Would ISVs join the so-called Red Hat Exchange (RHX)?
The answer is an overwhelming “yes.” Several major open source application providers, who declined to be named, told The VAR Guy that they will join the exchange when it launches later this year. A spokesperson for MySQL, the leading open source database, was even more direct. “Our MySQL Enterprise solution will be one of the first third-party products available through Red Hat Exchange (RHX),” he wrote in an email to The VAR Guy. “It certainly shows that the open source market is maturing past the early adopter/do-it-yourselfer phase.”
Still, MySQL is balancing its messages to the market, leaving room for integration partners like SpikeSource to flex their muscle as well. “We think it’s great that Red Hat recognizes this & is launching this offering to provide additional support and services for small- and medium-sized
companies,” the MySQL spokesman noted. “Red Hat also understands that this isn’t going to be the perfect answer for everyone (one-size-fits-all), but it’s important to launch and
learn from this new, alternative channel option.”
Hmm. Sounds like the exchange will have plenty of ISV support but just about everyone continues to hedge their options as the open source market continues to mature.
Red Hat has at least 20 ISVs ready to go for this. Specifics should be announced around May perhaps at Red Hat’s big annual event for customers and ISVs
