Swedish Army Shoots NT Server
The VAR Guy is having flashbacks to 1997, when Microsoft, Novell and Unix providers promoted tools to help you move from one server operating system to another. It was a mad scramble for market share and NT came out on top.
Fast forward to 2007, and the tug of war now involves Microsoft, Novell … and Red Hat. Some organizations–such as the Swedish Army–plan to replace their Windows NT servers with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
But don’t weep for Microsoft. The software giant can try to win back the business by sending in a mercenary–otherwise known as Novell. In fact, Novell has introduced a course that trains admins to migrate from Red Hat to Novell SuSE Linux.
Hmmm. The VAR Guy is intrigued: Dump NT for Red Hat. Then jump from Red Hat to SuSE Linux. By the time you’re finally ready for your next migration, Windows Longhorn should be waiting in the wings.
