McAfee — only a few months after acquiring SaaS security specialist MX Logic — is providing some clues and statements about the company’s managed services strategy. Here’s a look.

Direct vs. Indirect
The key takeaway: McAfee concedes it sometimes sells managed services direct on a “very small basis” — for instance, if there’s a new technology or product McAfee is taking to market for the very first time. In that case, Louks says, McAfee wants to make sure their roll-out goes smooth and gain the knowledge and ability to train the reseller. Louks put it cutely “we need to prove it to ourselves.”
Some rivals — such as Sophos — are playing up the fact that big rivals like Symantec and McAfee sometimes sell direct.
However, McAfee seems to be managing the MX Logic acquisition well, according to managed services partners that have worked with MX Logic for several years. McAfee acquired MX Logic in July 2009. During the McAfee Focus partner conference in October 2009, McAfee reached out to MX Logic partners like Spam Soap to reiterate a strong focus on channel partnering.
