The Real ROI for Investing in Training
Every time you turn around there’s some type of training required. With the dozens of vendors you are all working with offering some type of training, assessing where to spend those valuable dollars is hard for business owners. Sometimes the training is just for policy sake, but what about the training that encompasses skill-set and business growth.
Is there true value, financially and developmentally, in training? The simple answer is, absolutely! I agree, sometimes training is overrated. After working with as many solution providers I have over the years – it’s clear that the most successful ones continually educate themselves and their staff on the latest and greatest trends and innovations. The key – pick the vendor or product that is critical to your success – and make the investment in that training.
Training equals time and sometimes travel and expenses, and time away from customers and work is always a burden. There’s never enough time in the day to get everything done. But when training is provided, that’s the right time to take a break and focus on how training can benefit the business short and long-term.
Overnight your business will be seen as more professional and credible by your clients, as well as highly capable of resolving unexpected issues. Other great benefits of training are better service to customers, faster troubleshooting scenarios, and instead of reacting to problems you’ll work proactively to prevent them. The less stress, the more productive!!
Be careful though, all vendors offer some type of training, but is it really worth it? They must back up the talk and show you the value of that training, and the product or service has to be one that is an integral (or will be an integral) part of your business growth.
For example, the Datto partner training, on average, breaks down to:
$200 flight
$300 accommodations
$499 registration fee
$2,400 in potential intangible lost productivity (16 hours of lost productivity time @$150/hour)
Total: $3,399
But when you really analyze the numbers, the benefits are immeasurable.
Think about this:
After reviewing support tickets logged by Datto Partners over a 6-month period, Datto partners that attended technical training logged, on average, 53 percent fewer tickets than those who did not. Considering the amount of technician time consumed by those tickets, the Datto partner who receives advanced training saves approximately $5,100 per year of tech time.
Datto partners that attend training sell 4x more Datto product than those who have not. These additional sales are a result of more confidence and less “onboarding” time needed to sell more.
Yes, there is cost in attending training, but the above case studies demonstrate the value. Honestly, can you afford not receive training? As business owners and executives, sometimes you have to “bite the bullet” … make the investment in your people and you will find greater efficiency and increased profitability as a result.
After conducting numerous training sessions at the Datto headquarters in Norwalk, Conn., MSPs saw the benefit in the sessions, and asked for some in closer proximity to their offices. And that’s how the Datto Technical Training Roadshow was born.
The first Technical Training Roadshow makes landfall in Tampa, February 10-11, at the Tampa Marriot Waterside. Along with two days of hands-on training, you’ll have the chance to receive certification. Imagine you and your staff returning as certified experts in BDR and business continuity. That’s a major selling point for the end-user and sounds like a win-win.
