World Backup Day Heralds Arrival of Spring, Easter Bunny
World Backup Day is March 31. An important day, no doubt, but I wonder how the Easter Bunny feels about it. Does this steal some of his thunder? Easter is also on March 31 this year. Then again, no doubt the Easter Bunny is a proponent of backup, and has the master egg-hiding map secure with a Datto SIRIS. If anyone needs business continuity it’s the Easter Bunny (EB). Who would want to explain to all the kids Easter morning that EB is experiencing downtime and can’t hide the eggs?
Picture this: it’s the day before Easter and a very tired EB decides to take a nap before heading out to hide the eggs. He’s been up for a week straight trying to organize his map and color over a million eggs, and needs to rest up before his big journey. He takes a handful of soft, marshmallow Peeps to use as a pillow, on his laptop. We’re all saying “uh oh”, but to a tired EB, it just feels good. Unfortunately the heat from the laptop warms, and melts, the Peeps. They are now a sugary, liquefied mess both on and inside his laptop.
EB’s managed service provider (MSP) was alerted immediately of the disaster. And luckily, because of the importance of EB's data, the MSP had arranged backups to take place every 15 minutes. And because they had a Datto SIRIS, they were able to call up a screenshot to verify the backup. All the data was there!
Because the laptop was destroyed, the MSP virtualized the data to the cloud and EB was able to access his master egg-hiding map, and complete his night of hiding eggs and chocolate bunnies to the delight of children everywhere.
Do you have an interesting or quirky data loss or failed backup story that you are willing to share? Was someone supposed to perform a manual backup, and they forgot? Did the automated backup fail?
By now you’ve probably heard about the infamous “almost” data loss catastrophe during the making of Toy Story 2. There’s now even a video about the near catastrophe.
Of course the not so funny side of data loss can be found in examples like when Zurich Financial PLC lost confidential data on 46,000 customers. The Financial Services Authority, Britain’s financial regulator, fined the company $3.5 million.
The best way to mitigate the risk of data loss and eliminate downtime is with Intelligent Business Continuity. My kids are very thankful that the Easter Bunny’s MSP was prepared with Datto. I hope the Tooth Fairy has Datto too.
