Galaxy Gear Will Sink, Google Glass Will Soar
Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch has reached 800,000 unit shipments. Sounds impressive — but that’s not an actual “sales” figure. The big question: Can Galaxy Gear, Google Glass and other mobile devices really fuel a “wearable computer” product category? Hmmm…
First the news: Samsung issued a press release saying Galaxy Gear has achieved 800,000 unit sales. But in reality, the figure represents shipments to distributors and retailers.
Some pundits think actual sales are 50,000 or fewer units since the Galaxy Gear launched two months ago. Reuters notes that there are only about 70 Galaxy Gear applications.
Plus, major geek-centric websites have given the Gear poor reviews, stating that the device is too limited to attract customers.
Still, Galaxy Gear won’t sink the entire wearable computer market. The VAR Guy believes — strongly — that Google Glass will emerge as a hit with consumers and IT pros. The Google device’s hands-free design should allow VARs and MSPs to troubleshoot data centers and desktops while communicating remotely with customers and supervisors.
