Live Blog: Oracle OpenWorld 2013 Keynote Day 1
Oracle (ORCL) President Mark Hurd addresses OpenWorld 2013 attendees. Big Data, analytics and Oracle In-Memory Database are on the agenda. The VAR Guy offers his spin and takeaways to channel partners.
Greetings from Oracle OpenWorld 2013. Technically it’s day two — but this morning is the first morning of OpenWorld keynotes. First up: Oracle (ORCL) President Mark Hurd plus insights from Intel (INTC). Surely, we’re about to hear some Big Data, analytics and Oracle In-Memory Database news. Here’s the minute by minute recap.
The highlights include…
Mark Hurd, president, Oracle
- The Internet of Things: Hurd is running through some data points about the number of devices linked to the Internet (9 billion). He shared some of these high-level thoughts yesterday during Oracle’s PartnerNetwork (OPN) Specialized gathering. You’ll find the stats here.
- The Millennials: They’re going to be running IT decisions and they expect immediate gratification. If you don’t deliver it they will move on.
- Legacy Applications: The vast majority are 15 years old and they were born before the Web matured, and they missed the recent trends of smartphone, Internet search and more.
- R&D: Oracle is spending $5 billion annually on R&D. Hurd says that R&D gives customers pre-integrated solutions (Engineered Systems) — therefore reducing overall IT spending on integration services.
- Oracle In-Memory Database: That remains the big news here at the conference. It’s Oracle’s answer to Big Data, and in The VAR Guy’s opinion: Oracle’s counter to SAP Hana.
- NYSE-Euronext Merger: Hurd is now sharing the stage with NYSE’s CEO. The company is spending 30 percent less on technology ($200 million) annually by standardizing on one technology stack. He didn’t mention Oracle by name but it was inferred. The exchange processes 185,000 messages per second and $2.5 trillion in transactions daily. “It all has to happen in a really secure way.” Update: NYSE CEO just added “we’re all in on Oracle.” He’s now pointing to managed services and outsourcing services to Oracle.
Hurd’s keynote has ended. But he’s scheduled to host a media roundtable later today. The VAR Guy will be there. More updates coming soon…
