VMworld: Top 6 Virtualization Headlines for Aug. 31
Day One of VMworld is virtually over (pardon the pun). Here are six VMworld/virtualization headlines worth noting, and their implications for channel partners.
1. Going Into Small Business: New VMware Go tool helps VARs and small businesses to more quickly deploy VMware ESXi. Translation: Virtualization isn’t just for big data center consolidation projects. VMware wants VARs pushing virtualization into smaller business settings.
2. Desktops as a Managed Services: You’ve heard of desktop virtualization. And you’ve heard of managed services. Now, combine the two. What do you get? Certeon provides one potential answer. And yes, this desktop virtualization trend will involve channel partners.
3. vPractice Makes Perfect: Details are still sketchy. But apparently, VMware has unveiled the vPractice pilot program — which aims to help VARs productize new solutions and services around VMware. Here are some quick early details.
4. Zoho Lands In the Enterprise: Zoho already competes with Google Apps in the SaaS applications market. Next up, Zoho is working with VMware to allow enterprises to run Zoho applications in their own data centers.
5. Three’s A Crowd: Network World was ahead of the crowd when it reported Microsoft and Citrix were no longer big sponsors for VMworld. Just about every blog and IT site copied the Network World coverage. Too bad more sites didn’t link to that original coverage.
6. Accessing Your PC Desktop On Your iPhone: Yes, Wyse found a way to do it. Now, VARs can help customers to access their desktop PC applications remotely and wirelessly, using the iPhone.
The VAR Guy will be back with another VMworld recap on Sept. 1.

#5 shows just how much the software market has changed in recent years. Before virtualization came along I could not imagine any software company boxing Microsoft in at a trade show.
